After the Great Spirit made the world the morning stars came together at the most beautiful place they could find.  They gathered on the shores of a large but quiet silver lake surrounded by blue mountains.

Hovering above the waters and lighting the mountaintops with their robes of fire, the stars sang their songs of joy and agreed to meet there every thousand years.

One time when the stars were singing their mighty voices shook the mountains and there came a great crashing.  Huge rocks fell from the mountain wall and the waters of the lake began to pour through the opening and rush to the sea.

The stars were saddened, but as time passed they looked over the earth for another place to meet. They finally agreed upon a lovely valley with a winding river running through it.

When the stars arrived they realized that this valley had been the bed of their beautiful lake and the blue mountains around it were the same ones upon which they had cast their robes of light in ages past.

The stars were so happy that they placed the brightest jewels from their crowns into the river where they still sparkle today.  Since that day the river and its valley have been called "Shenandoah", which means, "The Daughter of the Stars"
